You've got to be pretty lucky to be out at 2a.m on a Monday night to see a Russian Rocket get hit by a meteor and explode in low Earth orbit.
You've got to be even luckier to have camera equipment on you when this happens.
But to be conducting a 30 minute exposure on that section of sky as the rocket explodes and begins to appear 20 minutes into the exposure is a one in a billion shot. There is a lot of sky up there and I should have bought a lotto ticket that week.
Southern Cross with an Exploding Russian Briz-M Rocket - Explosion.
Taken 20th February 2007 2.a.m.
Don't be tricked by the appearance of the object. It was moving incredibly slowly. Too slowly to see any naked eye movement. The tip of this object is where the object exploded and it slowly drifted toward the left as it expanded. This object trailed to the left through this photo for ten minutes giving the appearance of a comet or fast moving meteor moving towards the right, however, it is the complete opposite. This is the first time a man made explosion in space has been caught on camera.
I'm selling 1000 copies of this worldwide. Once they are sold, that's it, they are sold.
